This new web app (& collaborative project) lets you create artistic typographic animations made in Cavalry, directly in the browser.

Cavalry is the new cool kid of animation softwares. To demonstrate how it can be used to build branded creative tools, Algo built a new demo — a free web app (typeflow.tools) that lets you type a text, pick a color palette and create typographic animations, completely for free. The project is collaborative, featuring type animation templates from some of Algo’s favorite Cavalry artists.

What is Cavalry?

Cavalry is a popular animation software sparking a wave of procedural animation, pushing forward an aesthetic where graphic design, typography and creative coding collide, all within a no-code animation interface finally challenging the status quo of After Effects.

Algo + Cavalry

The Algo team was always fascinated by Cavalry since its initial release, and has been experimenting with it for years on client projects like Elastic or Ondo. But when the Cavalry team announced the upcoming release of a Web Player, the Algo team decided it was time to give it a spin.

What is Typeflow?

Typeflow is a free online tool, created by the Algo team, to demonstrate how Cavalry can be used to build branded creative tools for their clients.

Cavalry, now available in Algo

With the launch of this demo, Cavalry is now available as an engine for Algo’s video automation projects (in addition to After Effects & Lottie). It can be used to power branded creative tools for their clients, motion systems and wrapped campaigns with a unique video for every user.

A collaborative demo

Previously, Algo demos always had animation templates made exclusively by their team — but this time they wanted to do something different: collaborating with the Cavalry community. The idea was to have one scene made by each of their favorite Cavalry artists.

Meet the Artists

“We selected the scenes that could most interestingly be turned into artistic type animation templates” says Luca Gonnelli, Creative Director at Algo. The artists include ShoobAKA, Antonin.work, Matteo Campostrini, Mario De Meyer (plus one scene by the same Luca Gonnelli).

Open files available on Scenery

Most of these scenes are available for anyone to download for free from Scenery, an incredible community of Cavalry artists sharing their open files, helping each other by learning all the tools and techniques of this software.

The Tech behind

In the last months, the Algo R&D team has built a serverless, hyper-scalable cloud infra based on Linux, able to render Cavalry projects into millions of videos, via hundreds of parallel instances.
The in-browser live preview runs on the Cavalry WebPlayer: a new beta feature that plays Cavalry files directly in the webpage. This is the first project in the world going live with it.

Cavalry introduces the Web Player

“We’re extremely excited to announce the Cavalry Web Player. It’s now possible to create bespoke, fully customisable animations that can be viewed and exported from modern web browsers and with native support for Cavalry’s extensive features.

Designers and animators can now work unshackled by the limits of formats like Lottie. This will transform the review and iteration process and mean non-technical teams can create and deliver design systems to their clients in a light-weight, easy to use format.
